The San Francisco Marathon Celebrates 40th Anniversary

Attracting more than 27,000 runners and 80,000 spectators, the 40th Anniversary of The San Francisco Marathon was the largest event in the history of the race.
SAN FRANCISCO – On Sunday, July 23, 2017, 27,500 runners participated in The San Francisco’s Marathon’s 40th anniversary race. The event included San Francisco’s only Full Marathon (26.2 miles) and Ultramarathon (52.4 miles) races, along with two Half Marathons and a 5K. This year’s event was the largest ever in the race’s history, with more than 80,000 spectators cheering along the course and at the Finish Line Festival.

Jorge Maravilla, 39, Mill Valley 2:28:23
Jorge emigrated from El Salvador with his mother to the San Joaquin Valley. He started running track in 3rd grade, but didn’t start long distance running until age 30. When he isn’t training in the Marin Headlands, he is the General Manager at the San Francisco Running Company. Jorge has his eye on the 2020 Olympics.

Women’s Marathon Top 3 Finishers:
Devin McMahon, 25, Stanford, CA 2:52:49
Devin is a Ph.D. student in Earth System Science at Stanford. She graduated from Cornell University where she ran Women’s Track and Field all four years. Before that, she ran cross country and track and field in high school. Devin was not expecting to be a top finisher in the 2017 race and was surprised to come in first.

Special recognition goes to the runners who completed the historic 40th anniversary medal challenge in celebration of this milestone, and to the thousands of volunteers who provided support for runners throughout the course,” said Michelle LaFrance, Vice President of Marketing & Strategic Partnerships for The San Francisco Marathon. “We would also like to express our appreciation for the City of San Francisco, the many agencies we work with, and city residents for being gracious hosts to our runners year after year.”
Runners of The San Francisco Marathon also raised more than $300,000 for charity partners.
About The San Francisco Marathon
The original San Francisco endurance race delivers beautiful scenery and a strong community history. This Boston Marathon Qualifying event, Olympic Team Trials Qualifier and USATF sanctioned race starts at the Ferry Building, runs along the Embarcadero, over the roadbed of the Golden Gate Bridge, through Golden Gate Park and the Haight Ashbury District before finishing in front of Cupid’s Arrow. The events include a race for runners of all levels: Full Marathon, two Half Marathons, 5K, and an Ultramarathon. The San Francisco Marathon hosts the only full marathon and ultramarathon event in San Francisco.
